Chinese New Year is a much celebrated occasion in the world especially in the Asian parts of the world. All Chinese, those who are still Buddhist and those who have already been converted to other religions, still observe some of the customs as it is a part of their culture and tradition.

Most Buddhist abstain themselves from taking meat on the first day of Chinese New Year. Some just go for a vegetarian sort of breakfast with sweet cake and tea. This is believed to give them longevity in life. In some families, they do not go out until some one comes to their house first on the first day of Chinese New Year. Most families practice visiting the oldest and most senior member of the extended family, usually parents, grandparents or great grandparents.

Some bad luck superstitions surrounding the first few days of Chinese New Year include sweeping floors and breaking of glasses. Both actions mean that you are sweeping away prosperity or breaking your luck. Lighting of fire or using knives are also considered bad luck which is why all foods are cooked the day before. No foul languages are to be used during these days. Crying and quarrels are avoided as it is considered as inauspicious and would mean the person will be crying and quarreling the whole year ahead. Much happiness and cheerfulness can be expected throughout the Chinese New Year.
